Self-Serve Taproom Opens at Brewery Blocks

2101 C Street Tacoma

January 27, 2023

Horizon Partners Northwest is excited to announce the soft opening for the much-anticipated self-serve establishment, The Living Taproom. The taproom will follow the hours posted on their website; however will officially open their doors this Friday at 5pm. Grand opening festivities are planned for the following weekend (February 4th) where customers can expect to receive door prizes and swag from featured breweries.

The 2,794 SF space located in Brewery Blocks Tacoma is directly above Dancing Goats and Camp Colvos at 2101 C Street. The projects construction was completed by The Rush Companies with architectural design by Third Place Design Co-Operative.

Husband and wife owners, Andria and Colin Wunder, set out to create a space where people feel comfortable enough to hang out, relax, and try whatever is on their 34 taps. “After visiting a self-serve taproom in the Midwest,” says owner Andria Wunder, “I was finally able to sample beers based on what I felt in the moment without being pressured to just place an order. I initially wasn’t a big beer drinker, but tasting beer at my own pace with the simplicity of serving myself, really helped to shape my love for beer,” said Wunder. In addition to opening the taproom, Andria also works as the Catering and Events Manager at Crystal Mountain, “I think my fondness for the hospitality industry and my relationship with distributors has made this transition to owning my own place a no-brainer.”

The Living Taproom offers a rotating selection of beer, cider, wine, soda, and nitro coffee on tap. Using technology from iPourit, customers are provided RFID bracelets that control and track the pour with a touchscreen providing a real-time display of actual ounces served. When not in pour-mode, the screens above each tap will detail tasting notes, beverage labels, Alcohol by Volume (ABV), and International Bitterness Units (IBU) ratings. A predefined ABV is set for each beverage type and helps to monitor consumption. Once a guest reaches the predetermined pouring limit, they can request more ounces from a staff member.

True to their PNW roots and laid-back vibe, Colin and Andria created a space reminiscent of a cozy living room gathering place. In addition to the centerpiece wall of taps, the space is home to a 10-person live edge table - custom built by the owners themselves - from a tree from the house where Andria grew up. The taproom also features a 6 top swing table with suspended seats, allowing guests to swing back and forth while they taste. The outdoor patio boasts fire pits with a view where visitors will want to sit back and stay awhile.

The Living Taproom is pet-friendly and open six days a week to customers 21 and over. Menu items are rotating and available on The Living Taproom’s website or via Untapped. Customers are encouraged to bring in their own food or order from nearby establishments. The owner’s future plans include a robust events calendar along with the opportunity for customers and businesses to rent the space for private parties.

Horizon Partners Northwest has revitalized more than 11 buildings in Tacoma’s downtown core. Brewery Blocks Tacoma is their current project – an estimated $125 million effort – with only three remaining commercial spaces available ranging from 900-2,900 SF. Horizon Partners was recently awarded, by the City of Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission, the 2021 Award for Excellence in Commercial Preservation for the restoration of the Hunt-Mottet Warehouse at Brewery Blocks.
